One grouping of the Psalms (120-124) is named the Psalms of Ascent or Songs of the Way. These were sung as the Hebrew people journeyed up and down the terrain of their precious Promised Land which led to the Temple Mount. There they continued their songs and were greeted by four priests as they ascend-ed the fifteen steps leading from The Court of the Women to The Court of the Israelites. These Psalms were sung upon the celebrations of the three major festivals.
My help comes not from the mountains but from my God who made the heavens and the earth. Yes, not from the strength, stability, power of the mountains, but from the Creator of the mountains. We are moving upward and onward to worship our God. He is the source of perfect knowledge to whom we offer our sacrifices.
As the Psalm continues, moving from general statements to more personal ones, the Psalmist affirms that their God is with them through the various experiences of life, positive and negative. Their God does not sleep, never is off duty, is always loving and watching and caring for His children. Finally, the last statement climaxes the Psalm with the following words: I will be with you from here and throughout eternity.
What assurance is ours on our Pilgrim Journey!
